GSS were approached by Inneos, the facilities manager at the Ocean Terminal at Finnart, about a 25 tonne steel and timber sliding fender that had become detached from its mounting and jammed.
After a thorough inspection it was decided that rectification of the problem would require equipment with considerable lifting capacity. Weight restrictions on the jetty and approaches prevented the use of a mobile crane big enough to deal with the problem. Due to the busy nature of the oil terminal, time was also of the essence. It is an expensive business delaying an ocean going tanker.
Managers at GSS have an encyclopaedic knowledge of marine plant and its whereabouts. We contacted the massive, Dutch lifting barge GPS Atlas that had been operating locally and was weather bound, waiting on a weather window for passage to Holland. We were able to secure the services of this barge. The skipper and lifting superintendant visited the site to examine the job and the works were well within their capabilities and the barge mobilised to Finnart.
She was met by Callum and his team and easily completed her task. It was with great relief that Callum saw his plan coming together as the cost of chartering the barge was considerable and in addition she was keen to set off as soon as possible back to Holland.
