The ravage of wind and weather and occasional mindless vandalism keeps our team busy. Beacons near population centres are particularly susceptible to vandalism. The ingenuity of our team is often stretched trying to find new ways to protect the vulnerable light sources and solar panels from these vandals.
By contrast the lights for the measured mile off Arran are several hundred feet up the Arran hills. It is extremely arduous walking up to them with the climbing gear to scale the posts and replace the lamps. Sailors are notoriously averse to walking so our Nav Aid team includes two enthusiastic cross country runners who revel in this part of the task.
Our Contract to maintain various navigation lights throws up some interesting challenges. These are addressed by our personnel, often in the most innovative ways.
The structure at Glas Eilean poses challenges with its remote situation and difficult access. Fortunately the chosen day in February was clear, bright and calm, although very cold.
Our technicians decided the light it was best accessed by Kayak and off they set. The team had an enjoyable trip out to the light and it was successfully serviced then after a picnic lunch the team returned to base.
