Civil Engineering giant, Carillion, were contracted to upgrade the ferry terminal at Port Askaig on the island of Islay. Part of this contract required that the seabed be dredged to a depth of 18 metres. To achieve this it was necessary to mobilise a 50 tonne long reach excavator from W M Plant Hire onto a pontoon of 15 Unifloats assembled at the site.
Due to the bad weather at the time the 15 Unifoats were delivered by road to a quarry near Oban prior to assembly. When the weather had abated the Unifloats were transported to Oban harbour, assembled and towed to the site at Port Askaig where the excavator was loaded. The job was carried out satisfactorily and the pontoon returned to Oban and disassembled. The Unifloats were returned to their base by road transport.
