Q. How does a Marine Support Company move a nightclub?
A. Very carefully!
There has been a ferry plying its trade across the Clyde at Renfrew since the 17th Century. In relatively recent times, from 1952, a Chain Ferry continued this tradition crossing. Times move on, and with advancing time improvements were made to the surrounding transport infrastructure. The Kingston Bridge and Clyde Tunnel provided more convenient and faster routes across the Clyde until the ferry ceased to be viable. After 32 years the last vehicle transporter ceased transporting. It’s Large open deck area and mezzanine passenger decks were easily adapted to a flexible entertainment venue offering open dance and dining areas and more intimate spaces for smaller parties.
When Scottish Enterprise decided to renovate the Renfrew Ferry it needed to be moved from Windmillcroft Quay in the centre of Glasgow to the King George V dock in Greenock.
The fragile craft had to be towed down river and docked with great care then after substantial renovations, returned to a new City Centre site. Gareloch Support Services were called upon to assist and The Multi Cat Leslie M provided the motive power and the Mary M led the convoy assisting by steering the engineless, rudderless ferry. The journey was uneventful and despite the extremely tight turn into the dock, thanks to the skill and experience of the two skippers involved, the Renfrew Ferry was delivered unscathed.
